Berat
UNESCO World Heritage "City of a Thousand Windows"
About Berat
Berat is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Known as the "City of a Thousand Windows" due to its distinctive Ottoman houses climbing the hillside with their large white-framed windows, Berat is a living museum of architecture and culture.
The city is divided into three historic quarters: Mangalem on the eastern slope, Gorica across the Osum River, and the ancient Kalaja fortress at the top. The castle quarter is particularly remarkable as it remains inhabited to this day, with residents living among Byzantine churches and Ottoman mosques.
Berat's Onufri Museum, housed in the Church of the Dormition of St. Mary inside the castle, contains priceless icons by the 16th-century master painter Onufri and his son. The city also produces excellent local wine, making it a perfect destination for cultural tourism combined with wine tasting.
